Search for the tune you are working on and generate exercises on its chords: guide tones, arpeggios, scale patterns and chromatic approach, on the whole tune or on a single section, in every key and with bass, piano and drums accompaniment.

From the saved exercise you transpose it in one click and save it in the other keys: each one keeps its own speed and progress.

iReal gives you the backing, GEN gives you the exercise

iReal Pro lets you play over the chords of a tune. On those same chords GEN writes what to play: guide tones, arpeggios, scales, patterns, walking bass. You read it on the score, hear it with the backing and track your progress.

Load your iReal Pro tunes

Besides the 1,315 standards in the catalogue you can load the tunes you have in iReal Pro: GEN opens them among the standards, ready for generating exercises.

  1. In iReal Pro share the tune: you get an .html file.
  2. In GEN open “Jazz standards” and choose “Load from iReal Pro”.
  3. Generate exercises on its chords, in any key.

Tunes are loaded one at a time, not as a playlist.

Tablature: the score written in strings and frets

Under every exercise you can have tablature for guitar, bass or ukulele: the same line as the score, string by string and fret by fret. You find it in the score you export as a PDF or an image too.

  • Guitar
  • Bass
  • Ukulele

You can try simple tablature in the demo too; fingering by position and with three notes per string belongs to the PRO version, for guitar and bass.

Three fingerings

  • Simple

The lowest position, with open strings whenever possible.

  • By position PRO

The hand stays in one position, written in Roman numerals, and moves only when it has to.

  • Three notes per string PRO

Three consecutive degrees on each string, for scales and scale patterns.

Walking bass: the bass line, one level at a time

For bass players: on any chord progression, turnaround or standard the app writes the walking line in seven levels, from playing in two to the free line. Under each note you read its function in the chord and, on playback, chords and drums remain: the bass is yours to play.

In bass clef or octave treble clef, with tablature if you like. The first three levels are in the DEMO version too; the others belong to the PRO version.

Seven levels

  1. In two
  2. Root and fifth
  3. Arpeggio
  4. Approaches
  5. By step
  6. Enclosure
  7. Free line

With the DEMO version you can browse the paths; adding them to your exercises needs the PRO version.

Why GEN is different

  • The old way

    An exercise book

A few hundred exercises, always the same, written in a handful of keys. You transpose the rest yourself, and nobody plays them for you.

  • The old way

    A backing track

It accompanies you, but it does not tell you what to play: progression, key and tempo are those of the recording.

  • The new way

    GEN

Over fifty million exercises written on the staff, in every key, with a backing that plays along at the tempo you choose and progress that stays measured.

What you can do with GEN

  • Scale exercises

Over 30 scales in every key, 24 patterns and 18 articulations, over one or more octaves or within the range of your instrument.

  • Chord progressions and turnarounds

Major and minor II V I, blues, Rhythm changes, nine turnarounds and the progressions you write yourself: guide tones, arpeggios, scale patterns and chromatic approach on every chord, in one key or in all of them.

  • Jazz standards

Over 1300 standards in the catalogue: find the tune and generate exercises on its chords, on the whole tune or on one section, in every key. A saved exercise is transposed and saved in the other keys in one click.

  • Ready-made paths

Twenty-four playlists in four levels, from Basic to Pro: choose the key, add them to your exercises and practise them in the right order.

  • Tablature

For guitar, bass and ukulele, under the score of every exercise. For guitar and bass you choose the fingering: simple, by position or three notes per string.

  • Accompaniment

Every exercise plays with double bass, piano and drums, with or without swing. Switch off the line and play over the backing yourself.

  • Your archive

Save your exercises and find them again with search, coloured tags, personal notes and playlists.

  • Contacts and sharing

Connect with another user, a student or a teacher for example, and send them an exercise or a whole playlist: once they accept, it sits among their own.

  • Progress

Record the metronome speed you reach: the history and the chart show how you improve, exercise by exercise.

  • Linked theory

Seven tools on scales, keys, chords and intervals, linked to the generators: from a scale to its exercise in one click.

Designed by a musician, for those who practise

I have spent a lifetime practising scales and arpeggios, exploring every possibility they offer, and looking for new ways to make practice more effective, more stimulating and more creative.

Out of this experience came an idea: to create a simple tool, open to everyone and at an almost symbolic price, able to replace hundreds of exercise books, offer endless ways to practise and, above all, let every musician follow their own progress over time.

So I brought together my two passions, music and programming, and GEN – Music Exercises Generator was born.

I designed it for those setting out for the first time into the vast universe of scales and arpeggios, but also for those who, after many years of music, want to keep their level high, keep testing themselves and find fresh reasons to improve every day.

Because I believe that studying music should never become mere repetition, but remain a path of discovery, curiosity and continuous growth.

I hope GEN can become a valued travelling companion on your musical journey, just as it has become on mine.

Happy practising, and enjoy the music!
